Leaders Need Training

Research has shown that entry-level professionals need a more advanced skill set with regard to technology integration. As educational initiatives in higher education expand to include technology, Residence Hall Coordinators must be prepared to meet the needs of the employers who are looking for employees that can enhance the student experience through sound and thoughtful pedagogy.

Students are Demanding Change

Digital natives are driving the need for curricular reform in Higher Education. Students are expecting an academic environment in which social media, web 2.0 tools, and mobile technologies are being used to create a dynamic learning experience (Hew & Cheung, 2013). Integrating these technologies meets their needs, increases student engagement and student learning (Hew & Cheung, 2013).

Problem

Higher Education must discover how to best integrate educational technology to maximize the meta-curricular experience. If institutions expect to transform their curriculums, they must provide clear direction on how technology should be utilized broadly.  This direction must include support and focused development for faculty and staff in the area of educational technology integration.

Approach

The technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework provides a pedagogical foundation to educate faculty and staff on how to utilize technology to achieve their educational outcomes (Koehler and Mishra, 2009).  This framework revolves around three interconnected areas of technological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge. This framework has been shown to help teachers and faculty better integrate technology with in their specific content areas. This type of training is needed for all levels of staff, if technology is expected to truly transform the institution.
